Yes, at minimum a third-party motor insurance policy is legally required for every vehicle used on Indian roads.
Nothing is lost. Your accumulated No Claim Bonus — up to 50% off the own-damage premium — transfers to the new insurer when you switch at renewal, as long as you provide the NCB proof from your previous policy.
