Port Your Policy. Keep Your Benefits. Pay a Better Premium.

Rising premiums, slow claims or a hospital network that doesn't include the hospitals you trust? You don't have to start over. Under IRDAI's portability rules, you can move your health insurance to a better insurer at renewal without restarting your waiting periods — and switch your motor policy without losing your No Claim Bonus. We compare, file the paperwork and manage the timelines. Free.

Four Signs You're Paying for the Wrong Policy

Most people stay with an insurer out of habit, or because they're afraid of losing what they've built up. Portability exists precisely so you don't have to.

Premiums Keep Climbing

Every renewal costs more, but the cover hasn't improved. Another insurer may offer the same or better protection for less.

Claims Are Slow or Rejected

A policy is only as good as its claim experience. If settlement has been painful, that's reason enough to move.

Wrong Hospital Network

Cashless treatment only works at network hospitals. If yours aren't on the list, you're paying first and chasing reimbursement later.

You've Outgrown the Cover

Room-rent caps, co-pays, sub-limits, or a sum insured that made sense years ago. Newer plans often drop these restrictions.

Porting Isn't Starting Over

The whole point of portability is continuity. Here's exactly what carries across — and where the rules differ by policy type.

Health Insurance Portability IRDAI-regulated

  • Waiting periods you've already served — for pre-existing diseases, specific illnesses and the initial 30 days — are credited by the new insurer
  • Your moratorium clock keeps running instead of resetting
  • Accrued cumulative bonus counts towards your sum insured continuity
  • Works for individual and family floater plans, and when moving from a group policy to your own

Motor Insurance Switching NCB transfer

  • Your No Claim Bonus — up to 50% off the own-damage premium — moves with you to the new insurer
  • We obtain the NCB certificate from your current insurer so nothing is lost in the handover
  • Compare add-ons like zero depreciation, engine protect and roadside assistance across insurers
  • Works for cars and two-wheelers, private and commercial

A note on term & life insurance: these policies can't be "ported" the way health insurance can. If your plan no longer fits, we'll review whether a switch or top-up makes sense — and the one rule we never break is that your existing cover stays active until the new policy is issued.

Porting With InsuredIndex.com

The process has strict IRDAI timelines. We start early and manage every handoff so you never fall into a gap.

1

Share Your Current Policy

Ideally 45–60 days before renewal. Send us your policy copy and renewal notice — WhatsApp works.

2

We Compare With Continuity in Mind

We shortlist insurers likely to accept your port on good terms, and show you what changes in cover and premium.

3

We File & Coordinate

We submit the portability request and proposal, and chase both insurers through their response deadlines.

4

Covered From Day One

Your new policy starts on your renewal date — no gap, no lost credits. We'll remind you before next year's renewal too.

What IRDAI's Portability Rules Actually Say

Portability is a right, but it comes with conditions. Knowing them is how you avoid a rejected request or a lapsed policy.

  • Apply at least 45 days before your renewal date — portability happens only at renewal, never mid-term
  • Your existing policy must be in force with no break in cover
  • You port to a similar type of plan — an indemnity health policy to another indemnity health policy
  • The new insurer can still underwrite: medical tests, a premium loading or an exclusion are possible
  • Continuity credit applies up to your existing sum insured plus accrued bonus; any increase is treated as fresh cover
  • Riders and add-ons don't transfer automatically — they're chosen afresh on the new plan

Documents We'll Need From You

We fill in the portability and proposal forms. You just need to share the basics — usually a few photos on WhatsApp is enough.

  • Current policy document and the latest renewal notice
  • Previous years' policy copies, if you've renewed more than once
  • Claim history, or a no-claim declaration
  • ID and address proof for each insured member
  • Medical records for any declared conditions (health portability)
  • Vehicle RC and current policy for motor switches — we'll source the NCB certificate

Portability Questions, Answered

No. Portability is only available at renewal, and the request has to reach the new insurer at least 45 days before your renewal date. If you're mid-term today, tell us your expiry date and we'll schedule the port so the timing works — you don't need to do anything until then.
Often, but not always. The new insurer prices your policy on their own terms and can apply underwriting. That's exactly why we compare first — we'll only recommend a port if the combination of premium, cover and claim reputation is clearly better than what you have.
Your existing insurer is still obliged to renew your current policy, so you don't lose cover. Because we start early, there's also time to try a second insurer. The one thing to avoid is letting the old policy lapse while a request is pending — we manage the dates so that never happens.
Yes, with a two-step process: when you leave the group cover you can first migrate to an individual policy with the same insurer, and then port that individual policy to another insurer at its renewal. Continuity credit follows you through both steps. We handle the sequence.
Not in the regulatory sense — portability applies to health insurance. For term and life plans we can review whether a switch makes financial sense (for example, moving from an expensive old plan to a better-value one), but we'll always advise keeping the existing cover active until the new policy is issued.
Nothing. Comparison, the portability paperwork, coordination with both insurers and renewal reminders are all free for you — there's no consultation fee and no charge added to your premium.
